Cate Blanchett is putting her red locks to good use, boarding a Lucille Ball biopic project to star as the iconic comedic actress in a script that would be written by Steve Jobs scribe Aaron Sorkin. We’re hearing there is no deal yet for Sorkin, but it would be Sony-based Escape Artists behind the movie that is in early development. It would center on the marriage of Ball and Desi Arnaz, her co-star on the seminal sitcom I Love Lucy and partner in powerhouse Desilu Studios; they were married for 20 years before divorcing in 1960. Lucie Arnaz Jr and Desi Arnaz Jr would also produce, so this has family backing which always makes such projects go smoother.

According to a source close to the project the role of Desi has not been set but that would be the next tap shoe to drop.

The Wrap broke the story first.

Blanchett is up next in the Weinstein Company’s awards-season hopeful Carol opposite Rooney Mara. Sorkin, meanwhile, just turned in the script for Molly’s Game, an adaptation of Molly Bloom’s memoir about the time she made millions by running the most exclusive high-stakes poker game in the world. That pic, produced by Mark Gordon Co, is eyeing a 2016 start.
