Brad Globe, President of Warner Bros. Consumer Products, will be leaving the studio in the spring after overseeing the lucrative division for more than a decade. Diane Nelson will now add the oversight of the division to her current responsibilities as President, DC Entertainment and President & Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. She will later name a successor to Globe.
Globe, well respected in the licensing and merchandising arena, had served in the position at the studio since 2005 after coming over from DreamWorks SKG, where he actually launched the company’s consumer products division. He worked with Steven Spielberg for 20 years; prior to DreamWorks he was at Amblin, where he also launched the consumer products division and did a little movie called Jurassic Park. That earned him kudos from the PMAA (Promotion Marketing Association of America) as well as from Advertising Age as a co-honoree for Marketer of the Year. In 2004, he was inducted into the Licensing Hall of Fame.
He is, simply put, one of the most experienced executives in the entertainment field.
Globe’s exit comes at a time when his old employer’s movie Ready Player One is readying at the studio and marks Spielberg’s return to the studio after a 14-year absence. That film is going to be filled with 1980s video game icons and would be a challenge to market and license as those properties are already secured.
Globe has done an incredible job over the years for the studio in licensing and merchandising such successful tentpoles as Harry Potter and The Hobbit to The Dark Knight and Man Of Steel. The studio notes that most recently, he was instrumental in the development of DC Super Hero Girls, the first-ever superhero franchise for girls only. The little girl category had, up until then, been dominated by Disney princesses and has truly been crying out for another category of merchandise.
The studio will be hard pressed to replace Globe with someone of his caliber. Nelson will be stepping in for the time being but will be hiring a replacement. She comes from a home entertainment and marketing background and also served as a director of promotions so she knows marketing, but licensing and merchandising is a very specialized field within the marketing department.
Right now, she is thick into the DC Entertainment side of things. Will be interesting to see who she hires.
