We already know the premiere date for the seventh and final season of FXX’s The League, but how will the group vying for the coveted Shiva go out? Details were few and far between during today’s Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour panel, attended by series co-creators Jeff and Jackie Schaffer along with stars Mark Duplass, Nick Kroll, Jon Lajoie, Katie Aselton, Stephen Rannazzisi and Paul Scheer. But confirmed is the fact that the show will continue to draw from real events for inspiration.
After joking that the show “tried really hard” to land Tom Brady as a guest star in the wake of the controversy surrounding the 2015 AFC Championship Game, Jeff Schaffer confirmed that there will be a “Deflategate” episode in the upcoming season. Jackie Schaffer added that The League remains relevant “because the NFL keeps giving us such great material.”
Among that material is the continued controversy regarding the rate of concussions suffered by NFL players. The final season will be digging further into that, as Jeff Schaffer revealed during the panel that Taco (Lajoie) “will retire from sex because of a concussion.” It also was revealed that previous guest stars will be returning, including Will Forte.
As for the post-League future, the panelists provided few concrete details but suggested the possibility of revisiting the series in some form in the future. Whether a proper reunion series or a TV movie wasn’t specified but, Jeff Schaffer said, “I think there’s still ways to play with this group, just in different forms.”
