BBC America has dropped the first trailer for original series The Last Kingdomfrom Downton Abbey executive producers Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant. The eight-part drama series, set against the birth of England, follows young warrior and outsider Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), on a fierce mission to reclaim his birthright.

American Horror Story‘s Dreymon heads up the international cast, which includes Emily Cox, David Dawson, Rune Temte, Matthew Macfadyen, Rutger Hauer, Ian Hart, Tobias Santelmann, Peter Gantzler, Adrian Bower, Joseph Millson and Henning Valin Jakobsen.

Adapted by Stephen Butchard from Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling book series The Saxon Stories, The Last Kingdom combines real historical figures and events with fiction, re-telling the history of King Alfred the Great and his desire to unite the many separate kingdoms into what would become England.

The Last Kingdom is a Carnival Films co-production with BBC America for BBC Two and BBC America. Neame, Marchant, and Butchard are exec producers, with David O’Donoghue co-executive producing, and Nick Murphy co-executive producing and directing multiple episodes. Chrissy Skinns is producer.
