NBC is reassembling the team behind its 2012 Western drama pilot Frontier. The network has put in development Talent, a drama with elements of music, from Frontier creator Shaun Cassidy and Jeff Kwatinetz’s newly relaunched company The Firm, whose predecessor Prospect Park produced the 2012 pilot.
Written by Cassidy, Talent is described as a family soap that centers around a music prodigy who has a unique way of dealing with the murder of his one true love. Universal TV, where Cassidy is under an overall deal, is the studio. Cassidy executive produces with The Firm’s Kwatinetz and head of TV Josh Barry.
Hourlong series with music have been growing in popularity since the breakout early success of Fox’s Glee. It was followed by two soaps, Nashville on ABC and smash Empire on Fox, NBC’s Broadway-themed drama Smash as well as the CW’s upcoming dramedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
NBC also has been doing annual live musical productions, with The Wiz! coming up next this holiday season.
Under his overall deal with Uni TV, CAA-repped Cassidy is working on the studio’s upcoming straight-to-series drama Emerald City. He previously created the ABC drama Invasion and CBS’ American Gothic.
Prospect Park’s series portfolio includes WGN America’s Salem and USA’s Royal Pains.
