We’ll cut to the chase: The official Star Wars Instagram feed nonchalantly dropped this extremely short teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens about half an hour ago. Normally something this short would barely elicit anything more than an “oh, cool”. But skip to the end. Teased two weeks ago at D23 in the limited edition Drew Struzan poster given away to attendees, we get our first onscreen look at John Boyega’s Finn wielding a very, very familiar looking lightsaber. Suddenly, this is all we’ll be able to think about today. Suffice to say, possible big spoilers.
The thing about this teaser is that despite almost everything in it having already been seen in the two previous proper trailers, it feels like the largest plot reveal we’ve yet seen in any The Force Awakens marketing. Our takeaway? This feels like the inevitable climactic lightsaber duel near the end of almost every Star Wars film. But unlike the hyper-stylized Samurai battles seen in the prequel trilogy, or the more classical fencing style duels of the original, this looks rougher, more amateur and potentially brutal. Adam Driver’s evil Jedi Kylo Ren looks like he’s about to explode with murderous rage when he sparks up his homemade broadsword, while Boyega’s Finn appears to be nearly incontinent at the thought of being sliced in half.
Later in the afternoon, John Boyega had this to say about using a lightsaber:
Casting is sometimes everything people. And Star Wars: The Force Awakens appears to have nailed it. We’ll all find out when it hits theaters this Christmas.
