Kicking off NBCUniversal day at the TCA Summer Press Tour, Sprout network president Sandy Wax announced that the preschoolers network will celebrate its 10th birthday on September 26 with a “total brand refresh across all our platforms.” The new look will come with a new, very Sprout-y tag line: “Free to grow”.
The network will also take advantage of the 10th anniversary date to launch Nina’s World, the animated adventures of a 6-year-old girl, her plushy toy Star (who only speaks when Nina is alone) and her abuelita (grandmother), voiced by 83-year-old powerhouse Rita Moreno.
There was much said about the cultural diversity of Nina’s World on today’s panel. Moreno—appearing with EP Michele Lepe (who also voices Nina’s mom, Mami) and series cultural consultant Homa S. Tavangar—said diversity “is almost obligatory” in today’s TV programming. But she added that including among Nina’s friends a deaf little boy (voiced by a young deaf actor) takes the commitment to diversity to a new level. “He in the most important way represents what this show is all about,” Moreno said.
Also a little different: Lepe and Tavangar said that Moreno’s grandma will be thoroughly modern and active like today’s real grandmothers (she does yoga). “My kids say ‘Glam-ma,’ ” joked Lepe. Added Tavangar: “We’re going with a 21st century Glam-ma”.
