EXCLUSIVE: Just under nine months after its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, the documentary from the Oscar-winning director of The Cove is set to hit the big screen again. Ahead of its massive December 2 global broadcast by Discovery Channel, Racing Extinction will be released by Abramorama in theaters on September 18 in limited release.
Called a “gripping, important film by some of our best storytellers,” by Discovery chief Rich Ross when the channel picked up the docu in Park City on February 10, the highly stylized film focuses on how close our planet is to the loss of thousands of species. Racing Extinction will air nearly simultaneously at the end of the year in all of Discovery Channel’s 220 markets.
Director Louie Psihoyos, producer and Insurgent Media co-founder Fisher Stevens and producer Olivia Ahnemann and the team behind the Academy Award-winning docu The Cove dispatched an undercover team to expose the racket of endangered species trafficking. The film’s team also infiltrated some of the world’s most dangerous black markets in their efforts to document the link between carbon emissions and species extinction.
Racing Extinction will go to other platforms, including VOD, after its broadcast premiere.
