Here’s our first look at By The Sea, which Angelina Jolie wrote, directed and produced. Oh, she also stars in it with husband Brad Pitt; it’s their first onscreen pairing in a decade. This one’s a tad different from the 2005 assassin actioner Mr. And Mrs. Smith. In the film inspired by European cinema and theater of the 1960s and ’70s, we find the couple in obvious crisis. They’re ensconced at a scenic resort in 1970s France, but the pair really needs to work some stuff out, you know? They interact with locals and other travelers, but the focus – amid the smoking, drinking and medicating – is squarely on the Pitts.
Every studio went after By The Sea, after Deadline broke the news of the project in May 2014. Universal picked up worldwide rights in two months later and gave it a plum awards-season release date of November 13. The studio also distributed Jolie Pitt’s previous directorial effort, last year’s Unbroken. The new film co-stars Mélanie Laurent, Melvil Poupaud, Niels Arestrup, Richard Bohringer and is exec produced by Chris Brigham, Michael Vieira, Holly Goline-Sadowski. The Pitts are the producers.
