In a notable acquisition for BBC Two, the channel has taken UK rights to Anglo-French drama Versailles. Zodiak Rights is handling international sales on the 10-part English-language series.

Set against a backdrop of power, love, betrayal and war, Versailles examines a defining period of French history. The year is 1667 and King Louis XIV is a 28-year-old monarch on the cusp of greatness. A ruthless leader, he will stop at nothing to achieve his vision of creating the most beautiful palace in Europe and seizing absolute control of France and his enemies. The cast is an international roster with Brit George Blagden (Les Misérables, Vikings) playing the Sun King.

A Canal+ Création Originale, it’s co-produced by Zodiak Fiction, Capa Drama, and Incendo. Exec producers are Simon Mirren (Without A Trace, Criminal Minds), David Wolstencroft (Spooks), Claude Chelli (Braquo), and Anne Thomopoulos (Rome). Yves Saint Laurent helmer Jalil Lespert is director.

The series kicks off on Canal Plus in France this fall; BBC Two has not yet set an airdate.
