Gravitas Ventures announced today that it has acquired all U.S. rights to the documentary Unbranded, which recently premiered at the Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto. As part of the deal, Unbranded will open September 25 in more than 25 theaters, with a simultaneous VOD release. Coinciding with the announcement is the release of the film’s official trailer.
Unbranded, billed as a story of rugged independence, follows the story of four horsemen – Ben Masters, Thomas Glover, Jonny Fitzsimons, and Ben Thamer – for five and a half months, as they bring 16 hand-picked mustangs north from Mexico to Canada. Their journey went through parts of Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, during which they traveled to natural wonders including The Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, and Glacier National Park. The film gives particular focus to the interdependence of man, animal and nature, and strives to bring attention to the vast, fragile ecosystem of the American west, and to the 50,000 wild horses in need of adoption. Unbranded was funded in part thanks to a highly successful kickstarter campaign that raised $171,000 from just over 1000 backers. Directed by Phil Baribeau (Mountain Men), who split cinematography duties with Korey Kaczmarek (American River Renegades), it’s produced by Dennis Aig, and exec produced by Cindy Meehl. The film won Audience Awards from both Hot Docs and the Telluride Mountainfilm Festival.
Nolan Gallagher of Gravitas negotiated the deal with Wilder Knight of Pryor Cashman LLP on behalf of the filmmakers.
