Starz’s adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling novels won’t be back until next year, but today Comic-Con fans got a look at Season 2. A trio of photos from the upcoming season of Outlander were shown to a SRO Ballroom 20 of the San Diego Convention Center. The trailer will not be shown anywhere other than Comic-Con. In what was the second SDCC panel for Outlander as a big debut in 2014, stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe were joined Saturday by EPs Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis and Gabaldon.
Season 2 cuts between 18th Century France and post World War I. Moore told the crowd the series will return to Scotland halfway through the season. He also noted Gabaldon will be writing one of the scripts for Season 2.
Following the path put down by Gabaldon’s second Outlander book Dragonfly In Amber, the new season finds Heughan’s 18th century Highlander Jamie Fraser and Balfe’s time- traveling Claire Beauchamp Randall now in France amidst finery and political upheaval. Season 2 has been filming since early May and, as Moore has said before, the Starz hit deviates somewhat from the book.
A success for Starz from its August 9 premiere last year, Outlander has proved a vital part of the cabler’s rebranding. Attracting female viewers to the previously predominantly male inclined Starz, Outlander saw an average of 4.9 million viewers during its 16-episode first cycle with a live same-day audience of 981,000 for its May 30 finale. The show was renewed for a second season less than a week after its debut.
Besides the Comic-Con tradition of providing sneak peeks, today’s panel also screened a Season 1 gag reel of the sometimes sultry and sometimes harsh drama. It’s part of the September 29 Season 1 DVD release. Check it out below.
