There are a couple of questions asked at every HBO TCA executive session: Will we see a new show from The Sopranos creator David Chase, and how about a new season of Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm? There was some encouraging news on both fronts today.
HBO six years ago started to develop a new series with Chase, A Ribbon Of Dreams, about the early Hollywood film industry.
“I’ve seen pages,” HBO President of Programming Michael Lombardo reported. “He showed us two hours’ worth of material, and I trust I’ll see more by the end of the year. I think he has something really unbelievable, but we have to figure out if is it a limited series or an open-ended series.”
“I think it’s really challenging to come back to television after a show like The Sopranos ... but I fully expect we’ll be back up here during my tenure with David Chase and a new show.”
On Curb, Lombardo recalled a meeting he had with David before the premiere of the Seinfeld co-creator’s play Fish In The Dark. At that meeting, David pulled out a notebook. “Do you know what this is?” he asked. “This is the ‘next season’ notebook.”
There have been no discussions since, but “I don’t think it’s out of his system,” Lombardo said. “When he has something to say, he will come back. I certainly see this as a continuing dialogue with him – a long one, but a continuing one.”
