The Batman prequel saved the best and the worst for last tonight at Comic-Con. The Joker stole the microphone from a fan who was asking a question from the audience but found himself immediately tackled by Hall H security. It was actor Cameron Monaghan who stayed in character as he was dragged away by security. Monaghan’s character of Jerome was introduced during Season 1. “This is for Detective Gordon,” Monaghan was heard to scream at the panel and actor Ben McKenzie in particular. “Would you say you have a high pain threshold?” The crowd at the multi-series multi-hour Warner Bros Television event went nuts, to say the least.

gotham panel comic con jokerMcKenzie was joined on stage at the WBTVfest by EPs Bruno Heller, Danny Cannon, John Stephens and DC boss Geoff Johns. Cast members David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne), Robin Lord Taylor (Oswald Cobblepot), Camren Bicondova (Selina Kyle), Cory Michael Smith (Edward Nygma), Erin Richards (Barbra Keen), Morena Baccarin (Leslie Thompkins), Donal Logue (Det. Harvey Bullock) and Sean Pertwee (Alfred Pennyworth).

Of course, his sudden appearance in the huge Hall H isn’t the first indication that the Shameless actor was unveiling the crazed comedian of sorts to the Fox series. Heller told Deadline just before the Season 1 finale that Season 2 would “answer a lot of questions about The Joker that were raised this season,” Playing Jerome, who confesses to Gordon that he killed his mother, Monaghan first appeared in the S1 episode The Blind Fortune Teller. “Jerome contains the DNA of The Joker,” Heller asserted in early May.

From the tweet that went out earlier this week those genes look pretty strong.

Besides the arrival of the Joker, tonight’s panel also featured a sizzle reel that showed some Gotham Season 1 highlights and a couple of glimpses of Season 2 to fans’ delight. The giant screens around Hall H all called next season “The Rise of the Villans.”
