Sony Pictures has dropped the first trailer for Goosebumps, based on the bestselling kids books by R.L. Stine. Jack Black stars as the author with a secret: his monsters are alive and he protects his readers by keeping them locked up in his original manuscripts. That discovery was made by Zach (Dylan Minnette), who moves in next door and takes a liking to Stine’s daughter Hannah (Odeya Rush). After the monsters are unwittingly unleashed, it’s a race to to get all the figments of Stine’s imagination off the streets and the kids have one night to save the town. Amy Ryan, Ryan Lee and Jillian Bell co-star.

The trailer looks great — and let’s pause to reflect on Jack Black playing a dad. The pic seems to be a solid 1-2 punch for Sony, a worthy combo with its big summer tentpole Pixels coming July 24; the studio is going big with both movies at its Comic-Con panel this week. Goosebumps has built-in book fanbase to boot (400 millionbooks sold worldwide in 32 languages). Rob Letterman directed this, with Darren Lemke writing the script based on the story by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. It has an October 16 release date.

Check out the trailer and see for yourself.
