UPDATED with details: GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump, asked why he revealed Sen. Lindsey Graham’s personal phone number during a campaign stop in Graham’s state, explained he did it “so people can call him, so he can maybe get something done – but he won’t be able to.”
Meanwhile, Graham tweeted:
PREVIOUSLY: Call him a jackass – pay a price.
South Carolina’s Sen. Lindsey Graham learned this today when fellow GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump came to Graham’s state to speak at a packed, and televised, rally and revealed Graham’s private cell phone number, urging everyone to call it. The rally speech was carried by all the cable news networks.
“It is getting ugly, and it is getting surreal,” CNN’s Dana Bash emoted to Wolf Blitzer this afternoon in the aftermath of Trump’s scorched-earth rally.
This, one day after Graham called Trump a “jackass” for having said Sen. John McCain was a war hero only because he was a prisoner of war, adding that he liked soldiers “who weren’t captured.” In Trump’s speech Tuesday, he called Graham an “idiot” and a lightweight, and then served up Graham’s phone number, saying, “Give it a shot.”
“Your senator — what a stiff! Lindsay Graham! By the way, he’s registering a zero in the polls,” Trump told the jammed hall, and TV viewers nationwide, as he kicked off his rally speech.
Later, he added: “This guy, Lindsay Graham – total lightweight. In the private sector, he couldn’t get a job … he wouldn’t be rich, he’d be poor. Lindsay Graham now says, ‘Donald, your language is inflammatory.'”
Chimed in Graham’s campaign manager Christian Ferry after the phone number incident: “Donald Trump continues to show hourly that he is ill-prepared to be commander in chief. The two people most excited about Donald Trump’s candidacy are Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Because of Trump’s bombastic and ridiculous campaign, we aren’t talking about Obama’s horrible deal with Iran or Hillary Clinton’s plans to continue Obama’s failed national security agenda.”
