Here’s the cold open for tonight’s Conan on TBS. Plenty of stars and producers will be jetting into America’s Finest City for Comic-Con, but that ain’t how Team Coco plays it. Conan O’Brien, Andy Richter and Jimmy Vivino and the Basic Cable Band decided to make the drive from Burbank to San Diego. “It’s only a little over two hours,” Richter tells O’Brien. Right — if you leave at 3 AM on a Tuesday. Or … if you take their route.
Deadline reported in May that Conan will become the first late-night talk show to broadcast from San Diego during Comic-Con, and the fun starts tonight from the 103-year-old Spreckels Theatre adjacent to the Gaslamp Quarter. The normally Monday-Thursday show is adding originals on Friday and Saturday this week as well amid the crowds, cosplay and commotion. The road trip is slightly shorter than the one O’Brien and company took four months ago, when they did a show from Havana, becoming the first American late-nighter to film in Cuba since the U.S. embargo began in 1962.
