Fox has been mum on details for its big Comic-Con presentation this year. But bet on the studio pushing its Fantastic Four reboot and Hitman: Agent 47. Also in the mix could be Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. And thanks to Deadline’s exclusive Conan news about the cast of X-Men: Apocalypse being the surprise guests on his his talk show tonight, it’s a good bet X-Men will be in the Hall H mix as well. Follow Deadline’s live blog below.
Moderator Chris Hardwick is on the scene now giving the spiel about not recording — they’re teasing a big event at the end.
Here we go, the the first trailer for Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
And now begins the Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials panelists.
Discussion of the film is what it is. Dylan O’Brien says “for me Thomas is kind of angry… at the end of the first film he’s just crushed with this guilt, losing one special friend in particular, knowing he didn’t lead people to the right place, it’s going to weigh on him.”
After some banter aboutBreaking Bad, Giancarlo Esposito says it’s “just as great an honor” to be a part of this film as that show.
Director Wes Ball is repeatedly making it clear this film begins right exactly where the previous film left off.
This is a fun conversation about The Maze Runner, but because we know we’re going to talk about Deadpool and Fantastic Four soon it has a “cool story bro” feel to it. But they are cool stories, especially whenever Giancarlo talks about anything.
They’re going to play a clip of “:the really scary monsters in our movie”.
footage is bleak and very very Hunger Games feeling, if you’ve read the third book I mean.
anyone who played Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us will find this entire clip very very familiar.
Maze Runner portion is over. Who’s next? Why it’s…
Frankenstein. We’re getting the wolrd premier of the Victor Frankenstein trailer.
oh god, there is a reference to Young Frankenstein in this trailer.
now coming out on stage, James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliff. Someone yelled out “I LOVE YOU HARRY”
OH also director Paul McGuigan is onstage too.
“It’s a love story between [Victor Frankenstein and Igor]” says McGuigan about the film. “It’s about giving the name Frankenstein back to the scientist.”
This is one of the most Scottish panels since Brave. Meanwhile, DanRad has an amazing beard. About the film and playing Igor, DanRad says “Igor is kind of being kept in abject conditions… Victor finds me and kind of lifts him out of those conditions, he saves me. Later Victor loses his goddamned mind, and how do you tell someone they’re doing that is what the film gets about.”
“If you’ve ever wanted to see Daniel Radcliff beaten up, abused, humiliated, this is your movie” – McAvoy.
My take away: It’s Frankenstein reimagined as a bromance action film. To that end, DanRad and McAvoy are flirting.
“I know Comic COn sounds like a party, but ask for ID. It’s worth it.” – Hardwick. TO huge laughs.
Asked what Victor and Igor want, McAvoy does a hilarious spot-on American accent: “Just trying to build monsters and be a good christian. Just building monsters and shit, and America”. Best moment of the entire con.
McAvoy on working with DanRad: “We have similar energy levels and physical abilities, so we just kind of go at it all day.” McGuigan: “And then we film!” Big laughs. And now McAvoy and DanRad are basically slash-ficing themselves. McAvoy pinned DanRad against the wall. Lots of girls screaming. Also lots of me screaming #noregrets
Everything they’re saying sounds like innuendo now, which Radcliff just acknowledged.
I wouyld probably watch McAvoy and Radcliff together in anything together after this Panel.
Now a new exclusive clip.
clip is of the waking of the monster. It’s snarky and funny and then kind of violent and (cgi) gross. I LIKES WHAT I SEES.
Victor Frankenstein is an origin story by the way, and also a retelling of the novel. Just to clear up any lack of clarity.
Origin story of Igor, weirdly enough.
But enough about that, it’s Fantastic Four time. Josh Trank, Simon Kinberg anbd the cast of the film are onstage now.
Josh Trank: “I have not been to Comic COn since I was 15. I stopped coming because it got too Hollywood. So this is Ironic.”
“A more grounded, dramatic, emotional, character driven story… it was more science than science fiction” Kinberg describing Josh Trank’s pitch for the movie.
It’s looking like Fox isn’t planning to make the trailers shown tonight available online “immediately” after the panel, so you’ll have to wait a while readers. This means of course that I am now in the unusual position of being a tastemaker. You’re welcome. My opinion is now as powerful as Reed Richards.
“It’s like living out a childhood dream” says Michael B. Jordan.
“You gotta respect the history and the legacy of Fantastic Four, being Marvel’s first family.” – Michael B. Jordan.
Toby Kebbel calls Doctor Doom the “best villain of all time… He’s driven by ego… it’s allowing your ego to run riot.”
“I think it’s very relatable, whenever you lose your temper you think you should apologize, but when you’re a villain you find a twist so you’re always right” – Kebbel on why audiences like villains.
Here’s the final Fantastic Four trailer world premiering. Remember people, my opinion is now god.
I wasn’t expecting this to be so much about cosmic science fiction but that aspect seems kind of interesting. Obviously it’s a trailer. Excitement and so on. Yes, you’ve seen all the beats the trailer hits, and it even spoils the film’s wham line. But I can’t help but forgive it any time Michael B. Jordan is on screen.
first Deadpool trailer. It’s hilarious
No I’m wrong, it’s the official debut of Reynolds as Deadpool in a video. AND IT IS HILARIOUS. Lots of f bombs too.
now Reynolds is on stage and the audience is screaming. He’s kind of in character as Deadpool – “looks like it’s time to make the chimi-fucking-changas” before thanking the fans’ freaking out over the leaked test video for making this movie possible.
Now Tim Miller and Moren Baccaren are onstage. Plus TJ Miller.
Briana Hildebrand in an amazing dress.
Tim Miller on why he’s making it. “Fox said ‘you can make it’ and I said YEAH”
“I think this character inhabits a space in the comics universe no character could. It’s a miracle the studio is letting us make Deadpool, let alone a rated R Deadpool” – Ryan Reynolds. “No matter what the ratings say, babies will love this!”
Reynolds just dissed the shit out of Green Lantern. “I’ve only done one proper- sorry, NOT proper – super hero movie, and I didn’t even get a suit then. The [Deadpool] suit changes everything on set.”
TJ Miller quotes the admonition against swearing on stage the panelists are given, then says “To the people who wrote this I just wanna say you’re gonna f*cking love this movie”
This panel has basically turned into the “Take it from me I love you!” sketch from Mr. Show, swearing wise.
Brianna Hildebrand had a huge crush on Ryan Reynolds growing up, she says. So did I. I mean no I didn’t.
Reynolds says “I guess I was her Joey Lawrence”
Horse puns are happening. HORSE PUNS, people. This panel is a comedy gold mine.
Whatever else this movie ends up being, they’re having a lot of fun making it, clearly, and that’s infectious.
Deadpool by the way is, in the comics, kind of insane and occasionally aware that he’s a comic book character. The banter, especially between TJ Miller, Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds is suggesting we might be able to look forward to that being in the film. This is the funniest panel I’ve seen all week.
On what to expect in the film, “it’s everything we loved about the comics, a guy obviously that’s going to break the fourth wall, and the most faithful adaptation of comic to film we’ve ever seen…” says Reynolds. “And at no point is his mouth sewn shut,” he says referencing the reviled take on the character from X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
And yep, they’re showing footage of Deadpool. Here we go.
holy crap this is hilarious and extremely profane.
Standing ovation for that trailer which is genuinely hilarious. They’re basically going for a “guardians of the galaxy but HARD R kind of vibe”. The audience is shouting “one more time” repeatedly.
“F*ck it let’s show it again” says Hardwick.
I don’t want to quote anything from this trailer, the jokes need to be experienced, but this thing is severely profane and gory and also, has songs by Salt n Pepa and DMX which makes it automatically wonderful by mood setting standards.
They’re hosting screenings of the Rogue Cut of Days of Future Past tonight after the panel by the way.
After a retrospective short about X-men that includes Hugh Jackman’s auditon tape from the 90s, Jackman came out on stage.
“playing the legend that is wolverine has been the greatest part of my life.. I’m here today for one major reason, and that’s to thank the fans… I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr just posted his exclusive sit-down Q&A with Bryan Singer. Read it here when you get a chance.
Jackman confirms “one last time” wearing the claws, and says “this has been the best thing that ever happened to me”
Jackman calls Bryan SInger “The one, the only, the amazing genius” and invutes him out on stage. This is a nice way for Jackman to kick off the Wolverine farewell tour.
Jackman didn’t have an agent when he auditioned for X-men. JAckman: that was the moment that changed my life forever.” Then Bryan and Hugh hug.
And now the cast of X-Men Apocalypse.
Fassbender, Oscar Isaacs, Jennifer Lawrence, this is practically a greatest hits of Comic Con 2015.
Also on stage, Olivia Munn, Simon Kinberg, James McAvoy, who has shaved his head since Frankenstein panel. YES he shaved his head like 45 minutes ago.
So we’re now getting some footage from Apocalypse.
final shot of the trailer is McAvoy finally bald and wearing a smart blue suit as Professor Xavier in a scene straight out of the comics. After the trailer ends he says “I can now finally say Patrick Stewart doesn’t have sh*t on me”.
Fassbender says at the beginning of the film Magneto has “hung up his cape” and “left his evil ways behind”
Oscar Isaac says “This world that we have, it’s not the world it should have been, because god’s been asleep. But then god wakes up,” describing the character of Apocalypse’s outlook. “Much like a cult leader, he sees people that need something, that want something, and exploits that.”
Also on stage, Olivia Munn, Lucas Till, Sophie Turner, Nicholas Hoult, Lana Condor, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-Mcphee, Tye Sheridan, Evan Peters…
Nicholas Hoult says “I can’t think because I’m still psyched about the Deadpool trailer” when asked about his character Beast.
Probably the reason the live blogging has slowed down is because I’m still psyched too.
“Someone’s come a long way since Attack of the Show, Olivia Munn” says Hardwick. “I can still deep throat a hot dog” she says.
We’re watching the x-men footage one more time. I forgot to mention it’s kind of great.
THe casts of all four of Fox’s super hero properties are being brought out onstage for a world record selfie With the most super heroes. This is a thing that’s happening right now. I want to remind everyone reading this that I am an adult human being also Stan Lee just came out to take the picture.
And Channing Tatum came out to give Stan Lee the Camera because this is a great day to be an American.
Stan Lee: “Now that’s a way to end a panel!” The panel is over. That’s the news and I am OUTTA HERE wokka wokka outdated humor. But seriously, thanks for sticking with Deadline through the liveblog. Those of us here in San Diego will now go and party, and by party, I mean sleep. Goodnight!
