It’s the fourth week of Season 11 of The Bachelorette on ABC tonight, but to me the real reality TV is over on Lifetime with the debut of UnReal at 10 PM. As my video review above says, the drama created by Marti Noxon and former The Bachelor producer Sarah Gertrude Shapiro is really great fun and eminently watchable TV about bad TV.
Centering on conflicted idealistic but manipulative producer Rachel Goldberg, played by Shiri Appleby, and the fictional Bachelor re-imagining reality romance series Everlasting, UnReal has all the raw ingredients of unscripted television. There’s a shallow beefcake bachelor with an agenda of his own and lots of loose cannons, played by Harry Potter franchise alum Freddie Stroma, and there’s the hottie girl, the desperate girl, the religious girl, the smart girl gone wild, a lot of booze and drugs, especially for Everlasting’s creator, and an executive producer who will do anything any way for great TV. Based on Shapiro’s award-winning indie short Sequin Raze, the script on the series produced by A+E Networks’ in-house studio is so fast and so sharp it will cut your hands if you try to catch it. Additionally, the behind-the-scenes feel is so on-point you’ll have to remind yourself it’s a drama not a docuseries. And then, saving one of the best parts of the show for last, there is Constance Zimmer’s fantastic performance as EP Quinn King – a crazed, cool and deeply cynical ringmaster for the circus that is Everlasting.
