Broadway stars Tracy Letts, Linda Emond and Danny Burstein have joined the cast of James Schamus’ directorial debut Indignation, based on the best selling novel by Philip Roth. The film, adapted by Schamus, stars Logan Lerman (Fury) and Sarah Gadon (A Dangerous Method), as previously revealed by Deadline.  Likely Story and Symbolic Exchange Productions are on-board the co-production with RT Features and X-filme. Producers are Anthony Bregman, James Schamus and Rodrigo Texeira. Stefanie Azpiazu, Avy Eschenasy, Lourenço Sant’Ann, Logan Lerman, and Jonathan Bronfman are executive producers. FilmNation is handling international sales. Principal photography begins this week in and around New York City.

Set in 1951, Indignation is the story of Marcus Messner (Lerman), the idealistic son of a humble kosher butcher from Newark, New Jersey. When Marcus leaves for college in Ohio he finds himself falling for a beautiful but troubled girl (Gadon), and in a dangerous conflict with the school’s administration and its dean (Letts) over the political and sexual culture of the era. Burstein plays Max Messner, Marcus’ father, and Emond plays his mother, Esther Messner.

Actor-playwright Letts won a best actor Tony Award for his portrayal of George in Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for August: Osage County (for which he also wrote the 2013 film’s screenplay). He is best known to TV audiences for his role on Homeland and is currently filming Adam McKay’s The Big Short, based on Michael Lewis’ bestseller, and Antonio Campos’ Christine. Letts is represented by Innovative Artists.

Three-time Tony-nominated and Obie-winning actress Linda Emond recently concluded a long run with Burstein in the Broadway revival of Cabaret and was seen in Julie And Julia, Across The Universe, and Oldboy. She has Three Generations, Jenny’s Wedding and The Family Fang in the pipelines. Emond is represented by CAA.

Burstein is a Grammy nominee and five-time Tony-nominated actor who will star this fall as Tevye in a Broadway revival of Fiddler On The Roof. He’s appeared in Blackhat, Transamerica and Boardwalk Empire. He’s represented by BRS/Gage Talent Agency.
