NBC’s Today show continues climbing back into the game with big interviews; this morning, various news outlets are latching on to Matt Lauer’s interview with Lyle Mitchell. He’s the husband of prison worker Joyce Mitchell, who allegedly helped convicted killers Richard Matt and David Sweat bust out on June 6. The interview is big news this morning in TV circles.
Lyle, his attorney at his side, threw Joyce under the bus in the interview, which is understandable given that she may have known the convicts planned to murder him. He noted she’d sworn to him that one of the convicts tried to kiss her “a couple times” but nothing more. “She swore on her son’s life that definitely, ‘Never have I ever had sex’ [with either convict],” Mitchell is seen telling Matt. Poor son.
Meanwhile, ABC’s Good Morning America scrappily countered with its own escaped-convict video — one in which convicted boss-dismemberer Richard Matt demonstrates use of a blow dart gun. He does so by having an off-camera pal shoot it into his own arm. In the ’97 video, he says, “Let’s dip these in AIDS blood, and we’ll put a patent on them and sell as deadly weapons.” The video was recorded before Matt was arrested for beating, torturing, killing and dismembering former boss, William Rickerson.
The search for Matt and David Sweat in Upstate New York has intensified this week, after prison-issue underwear, other items, and their DNA were found in a hunting cabin.
