UPDATE, 7:38 AM: One of the stars of Modern Family along with the President of the United States and the director of Selma were among those today celebrating the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of same-sex marriage in America. Check out their reactions below – we’ll update with more:

PREVIOUS, 7:04 AM: In one of the most widely anticipated decisions of the year, the Supreme Court today released its opinion on the same-sex marriage cases before it. By 5-4, with Chief Justice Roberts among the dissenters, the Justices found that under the 14th Amendment states cannot ban SSM. Under a broad ruling written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, the High court also found that states must recognize such lawful unions performed in other states. “They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law,” concluded Justice Kennedy in the opinion of same-sex couples. “The Constitution grants them that right.”

The bans on same-sex marriage by Michigan, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio were challenged by 14 couples and 2 widowers in arguments before the SCOTUS earlier this year. An issue that has strong support in Hollywood, Friday’s opinion effectively legalizes SSM nationwide in the United States. Before today, 37 states and the District of Columbia recognized SSM.
