STX Entertainment made this one of its first acquisitions as a new company when it snatched up U.S. rights from producer-financier IM Global to the remake of Juan José Campanella’s 2009 film — the original won the Foreign Language Oscar. Billy Ray wrote and directed the new version, which stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts along with Michael Kelly and Dean Norris. It centers on a tight-knit team of rising FBI investigators — Ray (Ejiofor) and Jess (Roberts), along with their District Attorney supervisor Claire (Kidman) — that is torn apart when they discover that Jess’s teenage daughter has been murdered. Fast forward 13 years, Ray uncovers a new lead after obsessively searching every day for the killer. No one is prepared, however, for the shocking, unspeakable secret that will reveal the enduring, destructive effects of personal vengeance on the human soul. The pic hits theaters October 23.

This is one of those instances where the filmmakers have much to live up to taking on an Oscar-winning original, but with a packed cast and the talents of Ray — nominated the year after Secret won its Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay (Captain Phillips) — it sure seems to have a fighting chance by the looks of this first-look. Do you agree?
