Open Road Films has acquired the U.S. rights to Life On The Road, the Ricky Gervais movie that revives Gervais’ David Brent character made famous on the original UK series The Office. Gervias wrote, directed and stars in the pic, which now has a UK release date set for August 19, 2016, with Open Road planning a wide theatrical release in the U.S. shortly thereafter.

The pic centers on a documentary crew catching up with Brent — former star of UK hit series The Office and now working as a travelling salesman — as he chases his dream of rock stardom by self-financing a UK tour with his band Foregone Conclusion.

“David Brent getting a big U.S. theatrical release? He can die happy now. (Spoiler alert – he does not die in this movie),” said Gervais today in the announcement by eOne. The company made a deal at Cannes in May to finance the pic with BBC Films and is distributing in the UK and Australia/New Zealand and handling international sales.
