The Lego Movie duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are tapping into their TV animation roots with Son Of Zahn, a new animated/live action hybrid comedy, which has received a presentation order at Fox. The project, written by former Wilfred showrunners Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne, has cast its live-action male lead, with Miller and Lord recruiting young actor Johnny Pemberton, who had a supporting in their 21 Jump Street movie franchise.
In Son Of Zahn, upon arriving home for the first time in ten years, an animated Barbarian father finds that reconnecting with his moody, live-action teenage son, Alan (Pemberton), and ex-wife while suffering a mundane office job and the banality of suburban life is harder than waging actual war in his distant, animated world.
The 8-10 minute presentation will shoot later this summer. Agnew and Jorne serve as showrunners and executive produce alongside Lord, Miller and their TV executive Seth Cohen. Eric Appel (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) will direct the presentation and serve as co-executive producer. 20th Century Fox TV, where Miller and Lord’s company is based, is the studio.
Since returning to TV two years ago, former How I Met Your Mother executive producers Miller and Lord have launched their first series, Fox’s Last Man On Earth. The duo, repped by UTA and Matthew Johnson and Sam Fischer, previously co-created the MTV animated series Clone High. In features, they recently signed on for an animated Spider-Man movie at Sony. ICM Partners-repped Agnew and UTA-repped Jorne have worked on Crank Yankers and Drawn Together. Pemberton, repped by CAA, Principato-Young and attorney Lev Ginsburg, recently guest starred in the pilot for NBC’s comedy series Superstore and may recur. Appel is repped by WME, Principato-Young and attorney Lev Ginsburg.
