Katherine Waterston is joining the world of wizardry. She will star opposite Eddie Redmayne (which Warner Bros confirmed in making the announcement this morning) in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, the Harry Potter spinoff trilogy from J.K. Rowling. Waterston, one of the ensemble cast members of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Spirit Award-winning film Inherent Vice, will play the role of a witch named Tina (short for Porpentina) who works her magic in the U.S. She meets magizoologist Newt Scamander (played by Oscar winner Redmayne) when he stops in New York City on his travels to find and document magical creatures.
Rowling is making her feature screenwriting debut on the project which is being directed by David Yates who helmed the last four Harry Potter films. Fantastic Beasts is slated to bow November 18, 2016 worldwide in 3D and Imax.
The film is being produced by David Heyman, who produced all eight of the Harry Potter films, as well as Rowling and Steve Kloves, who scripted all but one of the Harry Potter films; and Lionel Wigram, who served as an executive producer on the last four installments of the franchise.
Waterston’s other credits include the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby, Night Moves, Being Flynn, Taking Woodstock and Michael Clayton.
