Summer is truly here when the latest Big Brother (2.0/8) contestants get their house keys and that’s what happened last night on the Season 17 premiere of the reality series. With 6.81 million watching, the show pulled in its best debut viewership since the 7.18 million who watched in 2012. However, the Julie Chen-hosted show was down 13% among adults 18-49 from its Season 16 launch on June 25 last year. In fast nationals, that’s the lowest debut Big Brother has even had. Then again, the previous premiere low for the show was a 2.1/7 in on July 13, 2008. That close math means last night’s BB could get out of its ratings ditch if expected adjustments occur later today – as it stands right now, BB was the top-rated show of Wednesday’s primetime.

CBS’ night of unscripted continued with the freshman The Briefcase (0.9/3), which was even with last week’s low. Overall, CBS was tied with a recap and repeat-heavy NBC for the top ratings spot for the night with a 1.3/5, but won in total audience with 5.6 million viewers. In third place after Fox’s 1.2/4 result among the key demo, Univision was tied with ABC with a 0.9/3 on Wednesday.

ABC’s only original of the night was 10 PM’s Celebrity Wife Swap (0.9/3), which was up 13% from last week. The CW was all encores. Fox’s MasterChef (1.4/6) and newbie Bullseye (0.9/3) slipped 7% and 13% respectively from their June 17 shows.
