Turner Broadcasting System has extended its deal to air the American Film Institute’s annual AFI Life Achievement Award gala tribute through the next three years. The tribute will air on TNT or TBS through 2018, with encores each year on sister network Turner Classic Movies (TCM), Turner said today.
This year, the AFI will honor Steve Martin. The ceremony is set to take place June 4 in Los Angeles and will premiere at 10 PM June 13 on TBS, with an encore at 11:30 PM. TCM will present an encore of the special on at 8 PM July 30 during a night of movies starring Martin.
The highest honor given for a career in film, the AFI Life Achievement Award was established by the AFI Board of Trustees in 1973. It is presented to an honoree each year, “whose talent has in a fundamental way advanced the film art; whose accomplishment has been acknowledged by scholars, critics, professional peers and the general public; and whose work has stood the test of time.” Previous recipients include Jane Fonda, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Meryl Streep, to name a few.
