“Tonight marks the end of an era,” Jon Stewart said on last night’s The Daily Show as he said so-long to “the longest serving member of The Best F**king News Team, Samantha Bee.” Bee had been with the show since 2003.
Recently, we had to cross Bee’s name off our lists of candidates to replace Stewart as host of the show when TBS announced it had signed her to host a new comedy show, “cementing its relationship with [Bee and her husband, Jason Jones] even further.” The new show is being planned as a platform for Bee “to apply her smart and satirical point of view to current and relevant issues,” TBS said back when, without specifying it would air in late-night. In addition to hosting, Bee will serve as executive producer on the show, along with Jones, TBS said.
That was in addition to an earlier announcement, in which TBS crowed it had nabbed the couple to exec produce a comedy series inspired by their own experiences with family getaways, and starring Jones as the head of a family taking a road trip to Florida.
With two project in the works, TBS said it was in a committed relationship with Bee and her husband.
“We actually have their kids coming in next week to pitch us animation,” joked Brett Weitz, executive vice president of original programming for TBS. “Like her fans around the country, we absolutely adore everything about Sam, from her straight-faced sarcasm and ruthless wit to her uncanny ability to mine comedy gold from just about any awkward situation. After watching Sam’s work for years, we knew that her distinctive humor and talent belong at the front of her own show.”
