Here’s the first trailer for the first film from Tom Rothman’s revived TriStar Pictures. Ricki And The Flash stars Meryl Streep as Ricki Rendazzo, a hard-rocking singer-guitarist trying to make things right with the family she left behind in her quest for musical stardom. The Oscar perennial’s real-life daughter Mamie Gummer plays her kid, whose significant other has split on her. “She’s gonna be alright,” Ricki tells the current wife (Audra McDonald) of her ex-husband (Kevin Kline). “She’s always been a fighter.” To which the stepmom replies, “Well, she’s had to be.” The line elicits a knowing glance. Later, Ricki learns that her son (Sebastian Stan) doesn’t want her at his wedding, which she didn’t even know about. Not a lot of love for Mom upon her return. Meanwhile, Rick Springfield plays as a member of Ricki’s band who is in love with her. Listen for Streep and Springfield covering Dobie Gray’s 1973 classic “Drift Away.”

The film has a solid pedigree behind the cameras as well: Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme (The Silence Of The Lambs) and screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno). Marc Platt produced it with Cody, Mason Novick and Gary Goetzman. Sony releases the redemption song August 7.
