SMOSH is comedy duo Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox. Their YouTube site has 30 million subscribers, making it one of the very biggest on the video giant. The duo also has a huge presence on other social media platforms, and is particularly strong with 13- to 17-year-olds. It’s also had a number of musical spin-offs, mobile apps and other initiatives over its decade of existence.
Producers describe the movie as a high-concept Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and it’s directed by Alex Winter, who appeared in that movie. In the film, Hecox and Padilla’s characters are trying to delete an embarrassing video of Padilla before his high school crush sees it. That sets up the opportunity for them to run into one YouTube celebrity after another.
The film also features prominent YouTubers Jenna Marbles, Grace Helbig, Harley Morenstein, Mark Fischback (Markplier) and Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval, as well as Jillian Nelson, Brittany Ross and Michael Ian Black among others.
“With so many loyal fans expected at this year’s Vidcon event, where we will also celebrate SMOSH’s ten year anniversary, we couldn’t think of a better place to debut the movie,” said Defy CEO Matt Diamond.
SMOSH is following the distribution plan used last year for Expelled, another Awesomeness project that appeared theatrically, on VOD, on Digital HD (iTunes, etc.) and other platforms in rapid succession, leveraging the social-media reach of the film’s star to get the movie everywhere fans might be willing to pay for it. It was a top-seller on iTunes for several weeks.
“Loved by our audience, SMOSH is a huge digital brand and Ian and Anthony are big-time comedic talents,” said Awesomeness CEO Brian Robbins. “This film was a natural for us to produce and now distribute with Defy.”
Eric Falconer (Blue Mountain State, How I Met Your Mother) and Steve Marmel wrote the screenplay. Executive producers are Barry Blumberg, Brett Bouttier, Joe Davola, Shauna Phelan, Padilla and Hecox. Robbins is producer.
