Michael Keaton has had a pretty outstanding past year, with his turn as a fading superhero movie star in Birdman earning him a Best Actor Oscar nomination and the movie a Best Picture win. But for many fans, like those rooting for another Birdman movie by his character, Keaton will always be known as Batman and/or Beetlejuice, two career-defining roles that just happened to have been in movies released more than a quarter-century ago, in 1989 and 1988, respectively.
With Keaton hosting Saturday Night Live again last night – the first time he was on the show happened way back in 1982 – he and his SNL collaborators got those pics and their heavy cultural/career baggage out of the way early on. In fact, they jumped on it during the opening monologue, when Taran Killum and Bobby Moynihan interrupted to serenade Keaton with “Will You Play Batman/Beetlejuice With Us, Michael Keaton.” Then it gets weirder, thankfully, though they do get a little love at the end.
