Americans already get a lot of their news and newsmakers from late-night talk shows. John Oliver scored a coup in the latter, surprising viewers last night with an unannounced interview featuring Edward Snowden, or as Oliver introduced him, “the most famous hero and/or traitor in recent American history.”

Oliver traveled to Russia where Snowden has been living in exile after being charged with espionage over the leaking classified documents related to secret NSA surveillance programs. In the sitdown, the two discuss the NSA programs, with the conversation gravitating toward junk pictures. Here is the interview, which was part of Last Week Tonight‘s segment on government surveillance (it starts 16 minutes in.)

Snowden was the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary Citizenfour, which aired on HBO.
