EXCLUSIVE: Fresh from hosting the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Saturday Night Live cast member Cecily Strong has been set to join the cast of Michelle Darnell, the Universal comedy that stars Melissa McCarthy. Ben Falcone is directing. Strong joins Kathy Bates, Peter Dinklage, Kristen Bell and Annie Mumolo in the cast.
McCarthy plays a titan of industry who is sent to prison after she’s caught for insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America’s latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget. McCarthy created the character and wrote the script with Falcone and their Groundlings collaborator Steve Mallory. McCarthy and Falcone produce through their On the Day Productions with Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy through their Gary Sanchez banner. Kevin Messick is exec producer. Universal execs Erik Baiers and Chloe Yellin are overseeing.
Strong next will be seen in Relativity’s The Bronze, the Bryan Buckley-directed Sundance pic that gets released July 10 with Melissa Rauch starring. Strong also starred in Paramount’s Staten Island Summer and is currently shooting The Meddler, starring opposite Rose Byrne, Susan Sarandon and J.K. Simmons. ICM Partners and Brillstein Entertainment Partners rep Strong.
