“Be happy. Enjoy your life…”. And kill anyone the voice at the end of the phone tells you to kill, or else, apparently. That’s life in Wayward Pines, the upcoming event series from Fox, executive produced by M. Knight Shyamalan. The latest trailer aired during the season finale of Empire.

Created by Chad Hodge based on Blake Crouch’s novel Pines, the series follows Secret Service agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) who, while investigating the disappearance of two fellow agents, finds himself trapped in the titular town, a Stepford village of the damned in which no one is allowed to leave. The citizens live in abject terror of the mysterious people in charge who run things via random phone calls, which seem to usually involve orders to commit terrible acts upon pain of death.

Empire star Terrence Howard plays the town sheriff in the limited series, a role he booked before being cast in the hit hip-hop Fox family drama. Toby Jones co-stars as the head of a local mental hospital, Carla Gugino as one of the disappeared agents, and Shannyn Sossamon as Burke’s wife. Reed Diamond, Tim Griffin, Juliette Lewis, Charlie Tahan, Melissa Leo, and Siobhan Fallon Hogan also appear.

So, basically Twin Peaks minus the artistry and subtlety, and everything that made it cool. How did...

The series premiers Thursday, May 14 at 9 PM with huge backing from Fox, debuting simultaneously in more than 125 countries. In addition to Shyamalan and Hodge, Donald De Line and Ashwin Rajan also executive produce. The rest of us wonder if it’ll be a decent placeholder until Twin Peaks returns.
