UK TV execs Pat Younge, Narinder Minhas and Lucy Pilkington are launching Sugar Films, a London- and Cardiff-based TV production and digital media indie. The focus will be on integrating television content, digital production and creative solutions to create “bold, diverse and provocative content.” Those will include returnable formats, documentaries and specialist factual series for UK and international broadcasters and OTT providers.

Also under the Sugar Films umbrella, Sugar Films Lab will focus on sourcing new ideas and concepts from emerging creative talent and will include an online platform and a quarterly competition. The division will develop, showcase and pilot a wide range of voices and content, the best of which will then be offered to broadcasters, OTT providers, advertisers and funding agencies for further development.

Former BBC Chief Creative Officer Younge, who will be Managing Director, says the aim is to “redefine the notion of diversity in our industry as being modern, mainstream and value creating.”

At the BBC, Younge was responsible for in-house production in comedy, drama, entertainment, and factual across bases in London, Manchester, Bristol and Birmingham. Shows that fell under his watch included Strictly Come Dancing, Top Gear, Luther, Antiques Roadshow and EastEnders. He has worked in commissioning and production for over 20 years, across ITV, the BBC and Channel 4, and led the turnaround of Travel Channel Media.

Creative Director Minhas was previously Director of Programs at Diverse Productions, and has exec producing credits that include Make Me A Muslim and The Girl With 7 Mums. His other posts include positions at the BBC and Channel4.

A leading industry spokesperson on diversity and inclusion, Pilkington, who is also Creative Director at Sugar Films, most recently worked at BBC Worldwide, adapting Come Dine With Me and Stargazing for the international market. She also originated You Have Been Warned for Discovery Networks International and has held posts at Virgin Media and Channel4.
