ABCF built its original comedy brand on multi-camera sitcoms, most notably Melissa & Joey and Baby Daddy. The network’s EVP Programming and Development Karey Burke signaled a change in direction, handing out the first pilot orders after joining the cable network to two single-camera half-hour projects, Kevin From Work and Tough Cookie, from Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich and David Janollari. I hear the latter is not going forward.
“Single camera represents the evolution of our comedy brand,“ Burke said. ”Kevin From Work is an endearingly awkward love story – this time from the guy’s point of view.”
Kevin From Work, which begins production in June for a premiere later in the summer, centers on Kevin (Backpackers‘ Noah Reid), a young man who declares his unrequited love for his co-worker Audrey (Paige Spara) in a letter, believing he’ll never see her again after he accepts a job overseas. But when the opportunity falls through and Kevin is forced to return to his old job, how will he and Audrey continue to work together now that his feelings are no longer secret? Matt Murray, Jordan Hinson, Punam Patel co-starred in the pilot, which featured Amy Sedaris as a guest star. McG directed the pilot and is set to direct several more episodes.
Writer-creator Adler executive produces Kevin From Work alongside Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment and McG of Wonderland Sound & Vision.
This marks the fifth current series for Kaplan, who also has drama Chasing Life on ABC Family as well as Secrets & Lies on ABC, The Mysteries Of Laura on NBC and Instant Mom on Nick. He also has seven pilots in production, including one with Adler’s husband, comedy writer Justin Adler, at CBS.
