Three months after Endemol Shine Group laid out the top executive structure for its international operations, Co-CEO Gary Carter has announced his departure from the company. Calling it a “difficult and very personal decision,” Carter said, “In the last three months as the new group formed and the integration gathered momentum it has become clear to me that it is not a long-term home for me personally. Having been privileged to have worked for both Endemol and Shine, both formative and happy experiences, the prospect of the merger was always going to be complex and it became clear to me that this is not a context which plays to my professional strengths or personal interests.”
In December, Carter, who pre-merger was Shine’s Chairman, Northern Europe and Shine 360, was given oversight of much of Europe as well as the Nordics, Russia, the MENA region, Turkey and South Africa. At the same time, Endemol COO Martha Brass was named to co-lead international with Carter, covering other key offshore markets including France, Spain, Australia, China, and Latin America. Brass is remaining in her post.
Endemol Shine CEO Sophie Turner-Laing, said today, “Gary has been very honest in explaining that, though early into our newly-merged business, he has decided that it is not for him and wanted to act now so we can plan for the future accordingly. I have greatly valued Gary’s skills and appreciate his work to date in bedding in the new company but I am respectful of his decision and characteristic honesty in wanting to say now for the benefit of all.”
Carter, who prior to Shine was COO of FremantleMedia, will stay on for the next months as Endemol Shine works on finding a replacement.
In recent weeks as the behemoth bends and shifts to take form, Endemol Shine has been further defining the executive ranks across myriad divisions. This month alone, it set Eden Gaha to run unscripted and Carolyn Bernstein and Jeremy Gold to head scripted for the U.S. operation; outlined the leadership structure of its separate international creative team and format sales business; and gave birth to Endemol Shine International, the result of a combined Shine International and Endemol Worldwide Distribution.
