EXCLUSIVE: TriStar has made a deal for the first English-language film from Damian Szifron. He is the acclaimed director of Wild Tales, which premiered in Cannes and then opened in South America last August and became the biggest indigenous hit in his native Argentina. It also was Oscar nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.
The project is a mysterious thriller that he will write, produce and direct, and the logline is being kept under wraps. Szifron made his debut with the wildly popular Argentinian TV hit Los Simuladores (The Pretenders), a series that won the equivalent of his country’s Emmy, the Golden Martin Fierro Award. It was remade in Russia, Spain, Chile and Mexico. His next series, Hermanos y Detectives (Brothers & Detectives), had a similar result and was remade in Russia, Chile, Turkey, Italy and Spain. That led to his first two movies, The Bottom Of The Sea and On Probation.
Nicole Brown will oversee for TriStar, which is still cranking even though the architect of its revival, Tom Rothman, is now running Sony Pictures Entertainment. Szifron is repped by WME and attorney Carlos Goodman.
