Kenneth Branagh directs this live-action take from Disney of the classic Cinderella fairy tale, featuring Lily James as the girl by the fireplace, Richard Madden as the prince, Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother, and Helena Bonham-Carter as the fairy godmother among others in a fine cast.
Yes, you’ve seen a hundred versions of this story before (spoiler alert: it ends happily ever after), including that great animated Disney version from 1950.
But as I say in my video review above, you haven’t ever seen the story the way it’s been told here, in lush visuals and some terrific acting by Blanchett and others. It turns out that good things happen when you combine a terrific director, working with a great cast and the kinds of resources Disney can put into a film it thinks can be another monster hit like last year’s Sleeping Beauty live-action remake, Maleficent.
The cast also includes Stellen Skarsgard, Sophie McShera, Holliday Grainger, Derek Jacobi and Ben Chaplin. Producers are David Barron, Simon Kinberg and Allison Shearmur.
Disney’s investment here appears very well founded, and fans of the story will find much to love. The film debuts this week in the U.S. and many other territories (it opened in Russia and a few other territories last weekend).
