Disney’s Guardians Of The Galaxy and Fox Searchlight’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman took home top film honors tonight at the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards.

AHS Freak ShowOn the TV side, FX’s American Horror Story: Freak Show scared up three awards in the miniseries category: for special makeup effects, best period makeup and best period hair styling.

Legendary makeup artist Rick Baker and renowned hairstylist Kathryn Blondell received the guild’s Lifetime Achievement Awards at the event, held at Paramount Studios Theatre. The makeup artists and hair stylists are repped through IATSE Local 706.

Guillermo del Toro was honored with the guild’s make-up-artists-hair-stylists-guild-logoDistinguished Artisan Award. “I’m a member of the Academy, the DGA and the WGA, but here (patting his heart) I am Local 706,” he said onstage. He later added: “The most powerful person on a movie is the make-up artist. Do not f*ck with the make-up artist.”

Guardians took home two awards: David White won for best special effects makeup and Elizabeth Yianni-Georgio won for contemporary makeup. They’re both Oscar-nominated in the category. Grand Budapest Hotel also won two honors: Frances Hannon and Julie Dartnell for period makeup and period hair styling. Hannon’s also up for an Oscar. Birdman’s Jerry Popolis and Kat Drazen won for contemporary hair styling.

Rick Baker 1Baker, who has more Oscar nominations (12) and wins (7) than any other makeup artist in history, won Oscars for American Werewolf In London (1981), Harry And The Hendersons (1987), Ed Wood (1994), The Nutty Professor (1996), Men In Black (1997), How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) and The Wolfman (2010).

“All my life, a makeup artist was all I wanted to be,” Baker said in his speech, after being introduced by his American Werewolf helmer John Landis. “And I guess this (award) means I didn’t waste my life doing so.”

Blondell, with more than 100 film and TV shows to her credit, was the first female governor of the Make-up and Hair Stylists branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. She’s also Leonardo DiCaprio’s personal hair stylist, working with him on his last 12 movies.

“You’re never an island in this business,” she said. “Keep creating and respecting your craft.”
