Frederator Studios, the animation shop and networks run by former Hanna-Barbera president Fred Seibert, is reaching into international territories to acquire foreign-language properties that can be dubbed into English for distribution across its online and other outlets.
The strategy kicked off with today’s announcement of a deal for a Spanish-language cartoon series, Fin Punch! from Marmota Studios of Chile (where it was known as Personas Cetaceas), but will move far beyond South America in its search for new properties.
Channel Frederator Network will translate the 18-part series, and run it on the company’s Cartoon Hangover channel on YouTube. Frederator acquired worldwide English-language rights for online distribution of the series.
“There are no borders that define the best animation in the world and we will continue to search across the globe for programming that we think will appeal to our audience,” Seibert said. “The approach we’re taking with Fin Punch! is based (on) a standard broadcast distribution strategy – something that I think can work well for our network as we move forward.”
Fin Punch is set in an alternative universe where human live on land with marine mammals such as a dolphin and narwhal that are plotting world domination. The series debuts today with two new episodes available online each week.
Frederator’s two animation-focused YouTube channels have a combined 14.8 million subscribers who have watched the sites’ programming 719 million times.
