Another early renewal for BET’s Being Mary Jane. The network has given the drama starring Gabrielle Union a third season pickup two days after the Season 2 premiere.

Being Mary Jane, created and executive produced by The Game creator Mara Brock Akil and executive produced and directed by Salim Akil, follows the sometimes disastrous personal and professional life of news anchor Mary Jane Paul (Union). Richard Roundtree, Margaret Avery, Richard Brooks, Lisa Vidal, B.J. Britt, Aaron Spears, Latarsha Rose and Stephen Bishop co-star.

Being Mary Jane has been a breakout for BET, with the movie that launched it and the first season setting ratings records. It is one of several dramas with mostly black casts or a black lead that have done very well over the past year or so, along with OWN’s The Haves And Have Nots and Fox’s Empire and ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder.
