The list of the Top 100 films of the domestic box office this year is heavy on action and sci-fi, with those genres up 9% and 24%, respectively, from a year ago. That’s thanks in part to one of Marvel’s least-known comic properties to hit the big screen: Guardians Of The Galaxy debuted in August to $94.3 million and rolled on from there, amassing a year-best $339.2M gross through its run, spawning a sequel and furthering the notion that Marvel can’t lose at the B.O.

Disney’s distribution arm Buena Vista had three movies in this year’s top 10: Guardians, No. 3 Captain America: The Winter Soldier and No. 6 Maleficent. Meanwhile, the year’s marketshare champ, 20th Century Fox, had a pair of pics in the top 10: X-Men: Days Of Future Past and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.

Overall, the domestic box office for all films was $10.35B, off 5.2% from 2013’s high of $10.92B, with admissions off the most since 1995.
