ITV has busily been commissioning ambitious period dramas over the past few months with Jekyll & Hyde among them. The 10-part action adventure drama was announced in November and has now found its lead in Da Vinci’s Demons and The Tunnel‘s Tom Bateman. He’ll play Robert Jekyll, the grandson of the original doctor with the dual personality. Richard E Grant and Natalie Gumede (Coronation Street) are also starring. Grant plays Sir Roger Bulstrode, who heads the secret government department M10, which is known as ‘The Invisible Men.’ Gumede is Bella who forms part of a love triangle with Robert. Production on the series starts later this month in Sri Lanka before moving to London from February through July.
Promising mystery, fantasy, horror and sci-fi, the series will also be heavy on CGI. Set in 1930s London at a time of Hollywood glamour, aerodynamic cars and monster movies, the drama will focus on the young, attractive, and troubled Jekyll as he seeks to discover his real identity. This Jekyll is a young, sensitive and naïve man of intellect and morality, well-meaning and somewhat repressed. He transforms into Hyde in moments of extreme anger, stress and when his or the lives of others are threatened. And Hyde is a totally different person: a superhero with super powers, great strength, speed and invulnerability. He is confident, risk-taking and lives life on the edge.
Jekyll & Hyde is created by British actor and author Charlie Higson whose credits include The Enemy and the Young Bond series of books. He’ll write and executive produce. ITV Studios Director of Drama Francis Hopkinson will also executive produce with Foz Allan as series producer. Colin Teague (Being Human) is directing.
Bateman recently played the lead in the West End’s Shakespeare In Love. He’s repped by CAA. Grant recently did turns on Downton Abbey and Girls and is repped by Artist Rights Group. Gumede is best known for Brit soap Coronation Street, with appearances in Death In Paradise and Doctor Who. She’s with United Agents.
Further cast includes Stephanie Hyam (Murdered By My Boyfriend), Donald Sumpter (Game Of Thrones), Amit Shah (The Smoke), Phil McKee (Ripper Street), Christian McKay (The Theory Of Everything), Ruby Bentall (Lark Rise To Candleford), Enzo Cilenti (Game Of Thrones), Lolita Chakrabarti (The Smoke), Michael Karim (Inspector Lewis) and Ace Bhatti (Eastenders).
