The Weinstein Company will release its Jake Gyllenhaal boxing pic Southpaw wide on July 31. This is the movie directed by Antoine Fuqua and scripted by Sons Of Anarchy‘s Kurt Sutter and Richard Wenk about Junior Middleweight Champion Billy “The Great” Hope, a lefty champ who loses everything in a personal tragedy and is forced to fight his way to redemption.
Gyllenhaal is in full beast mode for this one as we revealed in the first look at the movie in November, gaining 15 pounds of pure ripped muscle for the role — this after losing 25 pounds to play the nocturnal adrenaline junkie Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler.
Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz co-star.
Southpaw’s release date mates so far include Warner Bros’ remake of Point Break and Focus’ sci-fi thriller Self/Less.
