Selma missed out on Best Director and Best Actor Oscar nominations today, but the civil rights film will be playing at the Executive Mansion with the leader of the free world tomorrow evening. President Obama will host a screening of the Ava DuVernay-helmed feature about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., sources confirm.
This, of course, is the same White House where meetings between Dr. King and then-President Lyndon B, Johnson occurred, as depicted in the film. Lead David Oyelowo will be in attendance I’m told along with other cast members. Along with the Best Picture nomination that Selma received today, it also got a nom for Best Original Song for “Glory,” which also won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award on Thursday. Rapper and former Hell On Wheels actor Common and John Legend, who teamed up for the tune, will be at the White House screening as well.
President Obama and the First Lady have hosted a number of Hollywood movie screenings in the White House over the years. In 2012, the Steven Spielberg-directed Lincoln was shown at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, and Mandela: Long Walk Of Freedom played there the following year with cast and crew for both in attendance.

See id Selma is one of the “OBAMA” pictures to show at the next SONY fundraiser on stage 30…
Oh My God! so racist the movie was nominated for BEST PICTURE…but no acting noms
obvious sarcasm
Oh yes, it has to be racism that this film was not nominated for anything else beside Best Picture. Couldn’t be that this … I don’t know … wasn’t that good?
Could be but not. It is THAT good. Have you seen this or any of the contendors? Or are you just talking out of your… Never mind. I already know the answer. Lol.
I’m a member of the Academy. It received more no nominations than it deserved. Yes, I’ve screened — everything.
From the Duvernay family. We all are proud you Ava Duvernay
This is a black movie for black people, so it should do $30 million and disappear in 3 weeks.
Abe, You are what’s wrong with some of society. SELMA is not a film just for black people just like SCHINDLER’S LIST is a film just for jews. Any one with any compassion and interest in the world, and common sense, would inderstand this.
This is a movie for people and all Americans regardless of skin color.
Let’s not try to minimalize a great film, especially if you, yourself, haven’t seen it.
I’m Korean-American, by the way.
Hahaha. No one voted for the English man who played a black American hero! I wonder why. Perhaps really lousy casting? No black American actors available?
It was very good, but not great. Casting was distracting. Seemed silly for Martin Sheen & Cuba to show up late in the story. It felt like a talent agency packaged deal with too many celebrities supporting a cause – not an Academy Award movie. But again, it was very good with an emotional story and great music.
There is absolutely nothing racist about Selma not getting enough nominations and stop trying to make yet another racial issue out of this. There are many great movies and not all of them got nods (i.e. Interstellar)
I swear, this whole racist witch hunt is getting out of hand. I thought when we elected Obama, we were promised ‘hope and change’? His presidency has only torn us apart. We all hate each other now. It sounds cliche, but can’t we just all get along?
While the media focuses on this non-sense, the US economy is burning. Many of our citizens have had their jobs taken away along with their health insurance. The middle class is shrinking and its not getting any better.
Obama has destroyed our economy. Everyone is under-employed and can’t afford to live. We must now purchase health insurance we cannot afford and do not want or need (mine is $450/month… contrast this to my $25/month auto insurance from Insurance Panda… or my $12/month renters insurance from Eagle… both private-enterprise!)
When we elected President Obama, weren’t we promised “hope and change”?
Also – For those complaining that these awards are “too white”, It’s not about demographics, it’s about excellence. Totally subjective.
Honestly there were barely any “Oscar worthy” films with black actors anyway.
#OscarsSoWhite
Maya ~ I think what Obama promised was DOPE and RAGE. Not, hope and change.
I find it very interesting that the very people saying that the Oscars are “too white” are the very same people crying about racism. Hmmmm, I’m sure those same people would never say the oscars were too black. Live with it folks.
Has the President of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, Cheryl Boone, a Black woman, made any statement on this matter?
The Obama’s screen three movies:
LINCOLN, MANDELA and SELMA.
Sounds mighty Black to me or at least somewhat related to Black Issues.
I wonder if the invited guests will be mostly Black Celebrities?
SELMA did not receive rave reviews and hasn’t done terrifically well in attendance numbers or money returns.
