The debut of Marvel’s Agent Carter tonight is ABC’s second TV series from the pop culture powerhouse.

Unfortunately, as my video review above says, Agent Carter suffers from many of the same shortcomings as Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.EL.D., which debuted last year with a slow start.

Like S.H.I.E.L.D., Carter is stuck in the vast, endlessly unfolding Marvel Universe, and it doesn’t really get to stand on its own. MAC does have a great lead in Hayley Atwell, who played Peggy Carter in the Captain America movies and elsewhere on the Marvel landscape, plus a strong premise of battling bad guys and sexism after World War II. But it’s surprisingly short on real dramatic action or a strong identity

Getting an eight-episode run on the Disney-owned network, Agent Carter’s straight-to-series order was announced last May 8, the same day ABC renewed Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. With S.H.I.E.L.D. S2 on winter break, the much-hyped Carter infiltrates the same Tuesday spot until March 3, obviously hoping that will help catapult it forward in the ratings.
