Saturday Night Live returned from vacation with second-time host Kevin Hart and plenty of current events to masticate upon, especially given the episode’s timing between last week’s Oscar nominations and Monday’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

In the cold open, Kenan Thompson’s MLK visits Pete Davidson‘s student writer, who’s doing a report on the civil rights leader. King’s delighted to hear there’s a new movie about him, but dismayed by Selma‘s Oscar nomination allotment.

“I guess we’re still climbing that mountain,” was his refrain, repeated several times.
