John A. Walsh, a fixture at ESPN since 1988, will retire February 1, sources there confirm. No reason was given for the move by the EVP and executive editor. A veteran sports journalist, Walsh is chairman of ESPN’s editorial board and helped launched ESPN The Magazine and ESPN Radio.
He’s also edited three sports-related books, including The Heisman: A Symbol Of Excellence and consulted such magazines as Vanity Fair and Esquire.
The reason for Walsh’s sudden departure seems to be unforced and simply a matter of timing. “He’s done it all,” said a source.
